Happy Valentine's Day from the “West Indies”

We would like to give a warm welcome to our beautiful new residents Rose Marie Hehn, Martha Ciampa and Liz Claus!
On February 25th, we wish a happy 88th birthday to beautiful Nancy Cappuccio. She has a great smile, wonderful sense
of humor and looks amazing!

Looking forward to Groundhog Day Feb. 2nd when groundhogs emerge from their burrows. This predicts the arrival of
spring! We will be enjoying warmer days soon!

Love is in the air! Happy Valentine’s Day from the West Indies staff and residents! Each year many people exchange cards and gifts with their special “Valentine”. The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day dates back to the 15th Century honoring Saint Valentine of Terni. Our residents will enjoy decorating and exchanging cards and candy with one another.

The month of February, for the most part, makes us think about love. I would like to acknowledge our staff for their love
and compassion year-round as well as their endless work and amazing dedication to all the residents they take care of. Our open and loving hearts are here for them every day! Some days present a challenge more than others, but everyone works together and walks their journey! I’m proud to be part of this team!

You are welcome to join us in the West Indies as we sing along with Bobbette, listen as Keary or Derek perform, dance
with dancing Chris or enjoy Mike Farrell’s accordion performance! See you soon!

Have a great month!  Leslie on behalf of Rey, Lupe, and all the W.I. Staff

Happy Valentine's Day 2018

I like to think of San Clemente Villas as a loving community.  “Assisted Loving” The need for love doesn’t come with an expiration date. Nor does it end when you move into a senior retirement community.

These are good reminders anytime, but they hit home especially around Valentine’s Day, when red hearts & chocolate candies float in the air & our thoughts turn to romance.

With so many living longer in assisted living & nursing homes, how can we make sure that need is respected & encouraged. It is not uncommon for senior residents to find companionship & sometimes true love. Oftentimes a resident has moved here from living alone and has become isolated, lonely & sometimes depressed. Assisted living offers services that draw residents out of their apartments, especially at mealtimes & for a variety of activities. And when they begin to meet others living in the community, they develop new friendships, and sometimes those sparks fly!

I believe we were all put where we are for a reason and why not enjoy life.  Please come visit us and see for yourself - Tour and be my guest for lunch anytime!  Wishing you love, peace & harmony

Hello Residents, Families and Staff Members of San Clemente Villas:

In honor of February, the love month of the year, I found several quotes I would like to share with you. The first one from Maya Angelou, "If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love."

Other fun quotes for Valentine's Day include:

  • “For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.” - Judy Garland
  • “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” - A. A. Milne
  • “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” - Frank Morgan
  • “There's a long life ahead of you and it's going to be beautiful, as long as you keep loving and hugging each other.” Yoko Ono
  • “The Eskimos had fifty-two names for snow because it was important to them; there ought to be as many for love.” Margaret Atwood
  • “When you love someone all your saved-up wishes start coming out.” Elizabeth Bowen
  • “I got a Valentine's Day card from my girl. It said, 'Take my heart! Take my arms! Take my lips!'

Which is just like her. Keeping the best part for herself.” Robert Orben

  • “The best smell in the world is that man that you love.” Jennifer Aniston
  • “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” Charles M. Schultz

Share just one of these with a person you love and I guarantee a Happy Valentine's Day!

So we won’t have a fatted calf, but we will have music, food and fun!

February Employee of the Month

cynthia colinCynthia Colin

Cynthia was born in San Clemente at the hospital right next door to the Villas! She went to Las Palmas Elementary then Bernice Ayers middle school and then San Clemente high school where she graduated in 2013. She came to San Clemente Villas in 2011. One of the girls in the kitchen had suggested she apply. Cynthia started as a server in the kitchen, and still does that on Wednesdays.

Two years ago Jing asked Cynthia if she wanted to train to be a Med-Tech, and she did want to. Cynthia’s favorite part about being a Med-Tech is that she gets to socialize on a one-to-one basis with residents. She is a Med-Tech on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Cynthia has a one year old at home, Leyla, which keeps her busy she says.

I remember, we had a baby shower for Cynthia here at the Villas! Cynthia’s favorite things to do in her spare time are going to the gym, and going out with her daughter. If Cynthia wasn’t working here her dream would be to be a nurse! “Maybe in the future!” she says. We honor Cynthia as Employee of the month who said as she was leaving our interview, “I’m really happy working here, that’s above all - that I love

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas to all!

I have, for a long time, been interested in other cultures and how the Christmas Holiday is celebrated. I learned several years ago that Christmas in Mexico is celebrated during a season that begins in early December to January 6th, with one other related event on February 2nd. During this entire time, one can see nativity scenes, poinsettias and Christmas trees.

The season begins with celebrations related to Virgin of Guadalupe, the patroness of Mexico, followed by traditions such as Las Posadas and pastorelas.

There is a mass and feast on Christmas Eve, the arrival of the ThreeWiseMen on January 6th ending with Candlemas and the presentation of Child Jesus images at churches.

These traditions are a mixture of remnants from the pre-Hispanic period, Spanish traditions, traditions created during Mexico’s colonial period and later adaptations from German and United States Christmas traditions. People in the Philippines like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible! The playing of Christmas carols in shops can start in September! The formal Christmas celebrations start on December 16th when many people go to the first of nine pre-dawn or early morning masses. The last mass is on Christmas day.

An old Victorian tradition was to hide a glass pickle in the Christmas tree the night before Christmas. The story behind this tradition goes back to medieval times.A horrible innkeeper stuffed two kids into a pickle barrel. St. Nicholas happened to stroll by the inn later on and heard of the kids' dilemma. He tapped the barrel with his staff and freed the kids, who ran home for Christmas dinner. And get this, humble (or umble) pie was made from the inner organs of a deer!

The original meaning of Christmas is a special church service, or mass, to celebrate the birth of Christ. Stories of the Nativity, or the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, are particularly important in religious celebrations of Christmas.

However you are celebrating this Holiday Time, I want to wish you blessings and wonderful memories this year with your families and friends!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the “West Indies”

rey santos
lupe ruvalcaba
leslie brazeau

Christmas is an exciting time of the year with family, friends, lights and decorations, cheery music and festive holiday meals! This is the one day of the year to remind us we have so much to be thankful for!

So, what is the spirit of Christmas? The answer can be said in one sentence “Giving without the thought of getting”. In the West Indies that means serving and giving with extra love and care. We know this is what makes the residents feel the spirit of Christmas!

December is a very busy month for all of us. Here in the West Indies Residents will be taking photos with Santa, decorating cookies, and enjoying a special Christmas party with their loved ones!

Christmas time brings up many memories. I wanted to hear from our residents. Francis M. said, “It is one of the happiest days of the year for me. We work together to make everything lovely for our family.” Patricia R. said, “I love our beautiful Christmas tree with presents that could only be opened on Christmas morning!” Eileen H. shared, “I enjoy Christmas music, hanging stockings on the fireplace and making cookies!” Eleanor W. chimed in with “Beautiful lights and children excited to see Santa Clause.” Sandy S. said, “It is always a very special day for me. All my family joins together and sings Christmas songs!”

And from all our staff and residents here in the West Indies may your family’s holiday be filled with joy and peace. Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

From all the West Indies Staff!

yaneth osegueraYaneth Oseguera

Yaneth is actually pronounced “Janet”. As some of you may know we’ve gone around and around on how to pronounce her name. Some people thought it was “Yaw’-neth” and others insisted, no, it’s “Jan’-it”. She explained to me that Yaneth is the Spanish way of spelling Janet but the “Y” is pronounced like a “J” and the “h” is silent!

Yaneth came to work at the Villas in 2006. She applied here because she knew the Ponce family. Yaneth started out as a dining room server. In 6 months she got promoted to supervisor. She stayed as supervisor for seven years and then moved on to Wellness as a Med-Tech.

She’s been at the Villas 11 years. When asked, she says she loves the residents the best. She enjoys talking to them, saying ”everybody is nice”. In fact, she says she “Just enjoys coming here.” Her kids ask her, “Why do you like it so much?” She just tells them, “It doesn’t feel like a job anymore - it’s just like visiting friends”.

Her children are Stephanie, 14 and Christopher, 15. Her favorite thing to do when away from work is spend time with her family. Something that people probably don’t know about Yaneth is that she loves to cook. Her favorite thing to make is salsa. “People in Wellness look forward to getting some” she said.

Yaneth is from Mexico. She came to the US when she was 12 with her parents and two sisters. (She’s the oldest). At the time she only spoke Spanish. She went to school, 8th grade, at Shorecliffs Middle School. She graduated from San Clemente High School. Then she took Medical Assisting classes at Saddleback College. She was happy to become a Med-Tech because it was in the medical field.

I asked Yaneth if there was anything she could be doing other than what she’s doing, what would it be. She said she was very happy doing exactly what she’s doing. We’re so glad to have Yaneth as a faithful and wonderful employee at the Villas. Here’s to many more years!

laura ponceLaura Ponce

In 2013 Laura’s parents had to go back to Mexico because they lost their jobs here. In Mexico her father is a dental surgeon. In case you didn’t know, Laura is not related to the other Ponces that work(ed) here. While in Mexico Laura realized she couldn’t make it there financially, so she came back. Her neighbor when she lived in San Juan with her parents was Lupe Ruvalcaba’s family. (Lupe is the co-manager in the West Indies). They told Laura that Lupe was working at the Villas, so Laura decided to apply. Her first job was as a caregiver in the West Indies where she still is today. She has since done some work on call on the “AL side”. What you might not know is that Laura has an Associates Degree in Business from Saddleback College. She was planning on going on, but that’s when her parents went back to Mexico, and they are still there. Before working at the Villas Laura was a girl’s youth soccer coach with AYSO. She did that for about four years. She’d do it now, but she’s needed on the weekends here at the Villas. Hows that for dedication? Indeed, Laura loves helping others. She likes listening to the residents’ stories like where they come from. She especially loves helping out on the AL side. When interviewing Laura I noticed she laughs a lot. I asked her when her birthday is, and it’s in June. She’s a Gemini. So I mentioned that Gemini women often go into the medical field or politics. She said she would have gone into the medical field if it wasn’t so expensive. But then she told me that’s what she likes about the Villas as it’s kind of “medical” related with taking care of people. Laura told me that she loves to do woodworking. Ask her to show you a picture on her phone of the kitchen she did with her dad! Laura we honor you this month as an awesome, dedicated caregiver!

Happy 15th Anniversary Paul and Aileen and San Clemente Villas by the Sea!

Wow, and to think I’ve been here for almost 10 years. Many of our residents and staff have been here longer, and an elite group has been here since day one!

That says a lot about our successful family-owned community. Personally I think we all work pretty well together, and yes, it does take a village.

Autumn has arrived, and it’s the start of a busy holiday season. Octoberfest is coming up on October 5th. The food and festivities are always enjoyed by all. As always all are welcome. Yes we are known for wearing our German dirndls & lederhosen! It’s great fun!

Then we’ll be having our Surf & Turf Anniversary lunch October 12th followed up from 5:30-7:30 will be our Anniversary Party featuring “Contraband” a wonderful band playing the “big band sounds” we all love to dance to. We will dress for the occasion in black and silver attire. We’d love to see some tuxes!
And finally we will end our month with a Halloween costume party. It’s a lot of fun to see our residents dress up and sometimes they get real creative. We’ll be having a costume contest so start thinking about it now.

We’re always entertaining our community. Friends and Families please come join in on all the fun we have here or stop by for a tour anytime. Thank you for your continued support.

Please call & ask about our Anniversary Specials happening through October 31st.

Happy Halloween!

Happy 15th Anniversary to San Clemente Villas!

I would like to congratulate Paul and Aileen on what an accomplishment San Clemente Villas by the Sea is after 15 years!

I’ve told my story about meeting Aileen in 1999 when she stopped in for a tour at another large community where I was working before, but for those of you who have not heard it, I will tell it again.

I remember “the vision” Aileen and Paul had for building their own assisted living senior community when Aileen shared with me in her enthusiastic way that she and her husband were thinking about building a community of their own!

In the year 2000, I ended up working for the Brazeaus on Saturdays at the “corner trailer”, helping to rent apartments that weren’t even built yet. It was exciting seeing the community Paul built from the ground up and meeting all the anxious “soon to be” residents and their families.

Little did I know it was a community I would be working at eventually full time and really loving my job and what I do. One person has described the Villas as “progressive, unique and a one-of-a kind experience!”

I believe that to be true today and will wish another 15 successful years to the Brazeaus!

Happy Anniversary!

Since we have so many new residents of the last three months, I would like to take this opportunity to explain the roles of our managers and supervisors here at San Clemente Villas.

The first person you probably met when you came to San Clemente Villas was Sherri Saunders, our Marketing Director. Sherri’s primary responsibility is to work with persons interested in moving themselves or their loved ones into the Villas. If you have a friend or family member you would like to refer to the Villas, Sherri is the person to contact. Also, if you are interested in moving to another apartment, Sherri is the most knowledgeable about availability.

Jing Federico, Joe Manimbao, L.V.N. and Amelia Diaz all manage the Wellness Dept. in different aspects, but work very closely as a team. Amelia oversees the care service program and Jing oversees the running of the Med Room. If you have any questions regarding your health or your care, please see one of these three employees.

Maria Nemeth is our Business Office Manager, and she is the person you go to if you have a question about your bill or accounting issues.

Salvador Caballero is our Food Service Director, which means he oversees all of the kitchen and dining room operations. His is the largest department in the building and overseeing the preparation and serving of approximately 500 meals a day is a monumental responsibility, but Salvador always has time to talk to residents about their food requests. I encourage you to attend our Food for Thought Meetings, held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

Our Memory Care Department, “West Indies” is now managed by Rey Santos, as the director, Lupe Ruvalcaba as the Lead Caregiver/Med Tech, and Leslie Brazeau directing the activity program. Their schedules are staggered so we have management staff present seven days a week.

Barbara Tancredi Corrigan is our Activities Director and now has Dianna Mendoza assisting with activities as well as Mario Veluz assisting Thursday through Sunday. Barbara puts together this newsletter that you are reading and the Activity Calendar. She is happy to discuss any of your activity interests with you if there is something you would like to see on the calendar.

Patricia Farias oversees the housekeeping department and Anna Lombardi-Veluz supervises the front desk staff.

Our long time Director of Maintenance, Nick Sgountzos is leaving “The Villas” to pursue other work opportunities. If you have maintenance needs, please continue placing your requests with the receptionist who will put it in the Maintenance Log Book so that the maintenance team is apprised of your request.

On the weekends Elaine West fills in for management as well as marketing and oversees what she affectionately calls her “weekend warriors.”

As the Executive Director I oversee all of the operations of the building and report to Aileen and Paul Brazeau, the owners. I maintain an open-door policy and am always happy to address any of your concerns. I also remind you that we have a Resident Monthly Meeting on the first Thursday of each month where you have the opportunity to meet and interact with the managers! Welcome to all!

Love to All, Jan McAlister, Executive Director

September is here! Tourists are gone, it’s the best time to hit the beach. Kids are going back to school. Maybe families have just one last BBQ or weekend camping trip planned. We are so fortunate & blessed to live here in sunny California, and especially here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea. It’s pretty close to an endless summer here. “The cruise ship that never sails.” So remind yourself to take time to sit back and relax, smile and enjoy life! Positive thinkers are healthy people and people I want to be around, it’s contagious!

Our days are gradually getting shorter. Fall begins September 22nd. Days are still warm and pleasant while our nights are getting cooler.

I have 6 grandchildren. One is going into 3rd grade, one is going into 2nd grade, one preschooler, one 3 yr. old and a 10 month old. What an exciting time as I watch my family grow! It’s a busy time also, helping in the classrooms, going to their games, plays, dance recitals, and special occasions. I am so proud of them all! Sometimes it hard to find the time but I always remember they are only young once and to enjoy this while I can. Weekends are usually family time. I absolutely love being a grandma, the grandchildren call me “Mema”. I love them so much, they light up my life! They keep me young and active.

Speaking of being a grandparent, It’s National Grandparents Day on September 8th. So celebrate all you grandparents! I hope you know how incredibly blessed they are to have you. Invite your grandchildren to visit, take them to the pool or reserve our library or private dining room for a family dinner. We welcome everyone, anytime. I feel very lucky to have known and lived with both sets of grandparents as I was growing up. The memories are so vivid and the stories that came to life were part of my childhood. There are so many residents that I’ve gotten to know that have such fascinating lives, and you’d never know until you sit and chat. I encourage everyone to take a moment and ask someone where they’re from or what they did in their lives. Who knows what you’ll learn. It’s a great way to stay active and alert. I’m so happy to be here at the Villas and to have the chance to know so many incredible residents and families.

Happy August! from Sherri Saunders, Marketing Director

Sherri Saunders

Happy August everyone! Wow! Higher temperatures – Summer is in full force. We’ve all noticed the heat and humidity and probably are tempted to stay put in our homes with the air conditioning blasting. It’s so important to stay cool and hydrated. I encourage all residents to take full use of our beautiful pool and spa! And if not, to exercise with the wonderful pool aerobics group – they meet everyWednesday during warm weather. You should just enjoy the water and all of its health benefits. So you don’t want to get into a bathing suit? I suggest water shorts and a T-shirt! Believe me once you do, you’ll love it and wonder why you hadn’t done it sooner. Summer is also a time for our lunch BBQs. They are fabulous! We thank Salvador and all our kitchen staff that work so hard to make this possible. We invite families and friends to come and enjoy our BBQs also. If you have a friend who is interested or has any questions or would like a tour, please contact me and we can schedule an appointment. Enjoy these gorgeous summer days. Be positive and keep smiling. Remember, you are loved. We are an amazing Villas family. I feel truly fortunate to be part of the Villas! Have a wonderful month of August!
